Approximately 2400 Yolo County children live at or below the poverty level. Tough economic conditions nationwide equate to less funding and fewer services to address the needs of Yolo’s working poor. Often, this disparity is most evident in the colder months and throughout the holiday season as many children begin each school year without essential items such as healthy food, warm clothing or suitable shoes. First 5 Yolo’s 2012 Community Needs Assessment cites parents’ concerns about adequately preparing children to succeed in school as one of the most important among Yolo parents, ranking up there with parenting skills and access to food.

To help address this concern and help prepare West Sacramento kids succeed in school, the Yolo County Children’s Alliance is hosting our 7th Annual West Sacramento Community Giveaway Day the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The event is a collaborative effort between YCCA, local businesses and community organizations to provide more than 400 families with food, clothing, blankets, coats, toys and other essential items.
