Shelby & Zalayah: A Tale of Resilience and Community Support
February 7, 2024 | Category: Community Impact
Meet Shelby, a courageous young mother, facing the challenges of parenthood with grace and determination. When Shelby reached out to the Healthy Families Yolo County program, she was on the verge of homelessness with her 8-month-old daughter, Zalayah. Despite the uncertainty ahead, Shelby’s resilience remained steadfast.
Living with extended family to ease financial strains, Shelby and her partner struggled to find affordable housing in the area. Crowded living conditions led to tensions and ultimately their eviction. Shelby sought refuge with the Healthy Families Yolo County staff. Responding swiftly, our dedicated team secured a night in a motel for Shelby, her partner, and baby Zalayah. At the same time, a direct referral to YCCA’s housing team was initiated. Shelby quickly transitioned into permanent housing with affordable rent. Shelby’s story underscores the vital role of flexible resources and community support during crises.
