Building Community, One Coat at a Time: Highlights from Community Giveaway Day

Bringing Warmth, Joy, and Support to Families in Yolo County
Rain fell steadily on the morning of November 23, as families gathered outside Riverbank Elementary School in West Sacramento. Despite the chill, the air was filled with hope and anticipation as parents and children lined up, umbrellas in hand. Inside, volunteers worked quickly to prepare for Yolo County Children’s Alliance’s (YCCA) 19th Annual Community Giveaway Day—an event dedicated to bringing warmth and support to families in need.
By noon, over 800 people had passed through the school’s doors. A total of 536 families received 1,200 winter coats, 650 holiday meals, and 500 blankets, all distributed with care and kindness. Children excitedly tried on coats, while parents picked up meal kits—each with a turkey and holiday staples—and blankets to keep their families warm. Sabrina Sanchez, a mother expecting her second child, shared, “This is our first time here, and it’s such a blessing. My kids will have everything they need to stay warm and enjoy a holiday meal.”

The People Behind the Magic
Over 40 volunteers worked alongside YCCA’s dedicated staff to make the day run smoothly. Volunteers included community members, local businesses, elected officials, and high school students from River City High School, all united by a shared purpose of supporting families in need. From helping children find the perfect coat to guiding families to resource tables, every task was filled with purpose and care.
Volunteer Maryam, a high school senior, reflected, “Seeing families leave with smiles made it all worthwhile. It’s amazing to know we made a difference today.”
Community In Action
The event wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of sponsors like Sutter Health, Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, and Yolo Food Bank, among others. These partnerships made it possible to distribute vital resources while reinforcing the spirit of collaboration. YCCA Executive Director Jeneba Lahai shared, ‘When we come together as a community, we show families that they are not alone. This event is a testament to the power of collective action.
Moments of Hope
In addition to receiving essential items, families had the opportunity to connect with a variety of local organizations offering invaluable resources. Booths were staffed by the Yolo County Office of Education, County of Yolo Health and Human Services, West Sacramento Police Department, Washington Unified School District Community Schools, United Way California Capital Region, and Welcome Baby. Each organization played a critical role in providing information and services to help families thrive beyond the holiday season.
At the back of the school, St. Joseph’s Mobile Mall allowed families to “shop” for a wide variety of donated items, from clothing to household essentials. Among the offerings were jackets in all sizes generously donated by the Short Term Emergency Aid Committee (STEAC), ensuring families could find warm and well-fitting outerwear for the winter. This unique setup provided an extra layer of dignity and support, ensuring families could select exactly what they needed most.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, the Department of Sound provided lively music in the gym, creating a warm and joyful environment for attendees. Outside, the Starbucks team went above and beyond by not only donating 15 gallons of coffee but also personally serving hot beverages to families waiting patiently in line. Their kindness and care were deeply appreciated and added a special touch to the day.
